How to get a short break

Find out how to arrange respite care to give you a short break from caring.

If you're finding it difficult to cope as a carer, don't wait until a crisis before asking for help.

One way in which your local council can help is by helping you take a short break. You should ask your council for a care assessment:

The person you’re caring for may be able to stay in a care home for a few days, giving you the chance to have a rest and recharge your batteries.

Alternatively, someone may be able to come to your home and help with looking after the person you care for.

You may be charged for this, or the council may pay. But there is no charge for a stay in any NHS facility.
