We have the power to carry out investigations of NHS trusts if we have evidence that suggests a serious problem that may be putting patients at risk. We would carry out an intervention if we believe that a service is not doing all that it can to protect patients, and want to identify the problem more quickly than would be possible with a full investigation.

Mortality outliers
Mortality outliers look at how many patients within an organisation have died after being admitted to hospital for a particular condition or procedure. If the number of deaths is much higher than expected we receive an alert.
